Exclusion Unit Officer (Behaviour & On-Call Support)

Location: Newham, East London
Contract: Full-Time, Term Time Only
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

We are seeking a committed, resilient and highly organised Exclusion Unit Officer to join our dedicated pastoral team at a thriving secondary school in Newham.

This is a key role within the school, supporting our behaviour systems and ensuring that students are held accountable while receiving appropriate support to improve their conduct and engagement with learning.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the school's Exclusion Unit, providing supervision and support for students who have been removed from lessons due to behavioural issues. The role also includes an active on-call responsibility, responding to incidents across the school and supporting staff in maintaining a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Exclusion Unit Management

Supervise students placed in the Exclusion Unit due to behavioural incidents.
Ensure students complete set work and remain focused throughout the school day.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, behaviour and outcomes.
Support students in reflecting on their behaviour and developing positive strategies for improvement.
Liaise with teaching staff, pastoral leaders and senior leaders regarding student progress and reintegration into lessons.On-Call Behaviour Support

Respond promptly to on-call requests from teaching staff.
Patrol and monitor the school site throughout the day, maintaining a visible presence.
Remove students from lessons when required and escort them safely to the Exclusion Unit.
De-escalate challenging situations and support students in regulating their behaviour.
Work closely with the Behaviour Team and Senior Leadership Team to uphold the school's behaviour expectations.

About You

The ideal candidate will:

Have experience working with young people, preferably within a school, alternative provision or youth work setting.
Be confident managing challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner.
Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Be resilient, proactive and able to work effectively under pressure.
Have strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
