Description:

Civils Estimator – Rail Infrastructure

The Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Civils Estimator to join a growing rail infrastructure team, supporting the preparation of competitive and commercially robust tenders across a range of railway civil engineering projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Estimator with a strong background in civil engineering and an understanding of the rail sector to join an established contractor delivering infrastructure, maintenance and improvement works across the UK.

Working closely with the commercial, operational and delivery teams, you will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, analysing tender documentation, obtaining supplier quotations and identifying opportunities to improve tender competitiveness while maintaining commercial control.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare detailed and competitive cost estimates for rail-related civil engineering projects.

Review tender documentation, drawings, specifications and bills of quantities to establish project requirements.

Develop accurate cost breakdowns covering labour, plant, materials, subcontractors and temporary works.

Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing.

Identify project risks, commercial opportunities and potential cost savings during the tender process.

Liaise with operational and commercial teams to establish construction methodologies, resource requirements and programme assumptions.

Prepare tender submissions, pricing schedules and supporting documentation within agreed deadlines.

Assess site constraints, access arrangements, possessions and other rail-specific requirements that may affect project costs.

Maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and other key stakeholders.

Support tender reviews, handovers and post-tender negotiations where required.

Ensure estimates are accurate, commercially viable and aligned with client specifications and contractual requirements.

Experience and Qualifications

Previous experience working as a Civils Estimator within the construction or civil engineering sector.

Experience pricing civil engineering projects within the rail infrastructure environment is highly desirable.

Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, plant and labour requirements.

Experience preparing detailed estimates, analysing tender documentation and obtaining subcontractor quotations.

Good commercial awareness, with the ability to identify risks and opportunities within tender submissions.

Strong numerical, analytical and organisational skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and relevant estimating software.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with commercial and operational teams.

A relevant qualification in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying or a related discipline would be advantageous.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join a well-established infrastructure business with a strong presence in the rail sector, working on varied civil engineering projects and contributing directly to successful tender submissions and business growth.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their estimating experience, work alongside an experienced team and play an important role in securing future rail infrastructure projects.
