The Opportunity
Walker & Sloan is recruiting an Estimator to join a main contractor based in St Albans.
You’ll play a key part in securing new projects, preparing competitive tenders that reflect the scope, construction requirements and commercial risks of each opportunity. This would suit you if you enjoy getting into the detail of a scheme and working with design, delivery and supply chain colleagues to build a considered submission.
Role Overview
You’ll manage tender enquiries from initial review through to submission, examining drawings, specifications and supporting information to establish the scope of works.
You’ll prepare take-offs, issue subcontractor enquiries and assess quotations, identifying gaps, exclusions and qualifications. Working with the wider pre-construction team, you’ll develop cost estimates that account for construction methods, sequencing, preliminaries and project risks.
You’ll raise tender queries, explore alternative proposals and contribute to tender review meetings, clearly explaining your pricing assumptions and recommendations.
Following a successful submission, you’ll support the the handover to the commercial and delivery teams, ensuring they understand the estimate, agreed allowances and outstanding risks.
About You
You’ll have estimating experience with a main contractor or substantial specialist subcontractor, with a background in non-residential construction.
You’ll be confident interpreting technical information, measuring works and comparing supply chain quotations. Experience across commercial, industrial, logistics or similarly complex building projects would be valuable.
You’ll bring strong numerical skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage deadlines without losing sight of the quality of your submission. Familiarity with Bluebeam would be beneficial, alongside confidence using estimating software and Excel.
You’ll also be comfortable challenging assumptions and discussing buildability, scope and cost with colleagues and subcontractors.
