Our client is looking to recruit an Engineering Manager – Rail in either Manchester or York.

About you:

The EM is responsible for ensuring that there is a clear understanding of the project remit and that the scope is well-defined. The EM will ensure that there is appropriate dialogue between the individuals, companies, projects and alliances that contribute to the wider programme delivery. The EM will also monitor the outputs from the programme to ensure that they cover all aspects of the remit and are consistent with each other.

As an EM within our Transportation business you will undertake a key role in developing and delivering our client requirements.  As an individual we would look to you to show experience in leadership, delivery performance, and excellent communication skills combined with being a team player.  The knowledge, skills and experience we value are varied as we continue to develop diverse teams.

As the technical leader and member of the project team you should have excellent communication skills, allowing you to maintain relationships with your client, your team and the organisation.  You will communicate progress, potential issues and risks to inform and proposed mitigation to your client and internally.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering lead responsible for ensuring that programme identified Key Outputs (KO) or delivery milestones are delivered to meet requirements as planned.

Key responsibilities in achieving this outcome include:

Define assets and actors which need to change to meet output, including facilitating day in life workshops to determine completeness of scope identification in core and out of core TRU area,
Ensure iCRD requirements or technical interface specifications as required have been prepared and issued, understood for all parties,
Establish Physical System Architecture noting changes required for KO *not generic architecture used for Hazard Workshops which is owned by CSM team),
Maintain Issues, Assumptions, Dependencies records,
Write scope element of system definition,
Produce RRDs in conjunction with delivery teams to define detail scope of works for each actor,
Endorse V&V matrix and record progress,
Establish T&C strategy for KO’s,
Endorse Safety Management Strategy for KO inc CSM,
Endorse KO migration maps,
Own Interfaces list for KO and ensure IDDs are appropriate and up to date,
Undertake system integration reviews at key points in the KO development and report on issues and actions required,
Input to change and risk management process for KO,
Prepare report on KO progress and issues on 4 weekly basis.

The engineering lead will work with timetabling modellers, Operation and Maintenance teams, Train Operating Companies and the technical systems integration team to achieve KO delivery.

Qualifications & Experience:

You will preferably have a Bachelors or Masters Degree (or equivalent Degree) with proven engineering management experience gained across a range of rail projects in a multi-disciplinary environment. It is desirable to be a member of a relevant professional institution with a sound understanding of engineering management principles and application in a rail environment. You will have the ability to:

Lead and guide others in implementation of Rail and relevant standards.
Undertake Engineering Manager and Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) role on rail projects.
Undertake Designated Project Engineer (DPE) and or Programme Engineering Management (PEM) role on rail projects.
Apply relevant rail assurance processes when working on rail design projects.
Understand the rail operational environment and constraints to find solutions to operational constraints.
Apply principles of rail System Engineering including; requirements specification and management, designing for robustness (Whole System Lifecycle), Safety by Design and System Integration and Verification.
Proven ability to engage with, influence, and manage communications at an operational level with the project team and both internal and external stakeholders.
Understand the factors affecting motivation of project team members
Excellent organisation skills and an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
