Description:
Engineering Manager – Infrastructure Division
Location: Harrow, London / Project Sites
Salary: £90,000 – £95,000
Employment: Permanent
Working Hours: 8:00 am – 5:30 pm
We are recruiting for an Engineering Manager to join the Infrastructure division of an established civil engineering and construction contractor.
This is a senior technical position responsible for leading the engineering design function and providing expert engineering support across infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will act as a key technical authority within the business, supporting project teams, reviewing engineering proposals and ensuring engineering challenges are identified and resolved before they become operational issues.
The role would particularly suit a Chartered Senior or Principal Engineer with a strong Temporary Works design background who is ready to step into an Engineering Manager position.
The position will be split between the company’s head office in Harrow and visits to project sites as required.
The Role
You will lead the Engineering Design team within the Infrastructure division, reporting to the Head of Engineering while operating with a high level of independence.
You will act as a subject matter expert for engineering and Temporary Works matters, supporting project teams and representing the contractor in technical discussions with clients, designers and other stakeholders.
Key responsibilities will include:
Providing technical leadership and engineering support across infrastructure projects
Identifying and resolving engineering challenges before they impact project delivery
Leading and supporting a small engineering design team
Ensuring engineering teams have the appropriate resources, support and development opportunities
Assessing Temporary Works Coordinators and ensuring Temporary Works procedures are correctly implemented
Ensuring appropriate design checks are completed for both in-house and outsourced Temporary Works designs
Reviewing engineering proposals produced by project and tender teams
Providing internal peer reviews and technical challenge where required
Identifying changes from tender assumptions and understanding the potential commercial implications
Identifying and developing value-engineering opportunities
Supporting the implementation of the Quality Management System and ensuring appropriate project plans are in place
Producing technical reports, engineering documentation and recommendations
Working directly with client teams and clearly communicating the contractor's technical position
Providing independent engineering input where the appropriate technical solution may differ from the initial operational approach
About You
We are looking for an experienced Temporary Works Design Engineer with approximately 10–15 years' relevant design experience.
You do not necessarily need to be operating at Engineering Manager level already. Applications are particularly welcomed from Chartered Senior or Principal Engineers who have the technical experience and leadership capability to take the next step in their career.
You should have experience managing Temporary Works design projects or technical workstreams for contractor clients and be comfortable providing technical advice to project and operational teams.
Experience can have been gained within a consultancy or contractor environment, provided you have strong exposure to delivering Temporary Works solutions for construction projects.
Requirements
Chartered Engineer status with ICE, IStructE or an equivalent recognised professional body
Degree in a relevant engineering discipline
Approximately 10–15 years' Temporary Works design experience
Strong Temporary Works design and checking experience
Experience managing Temporary Works design projects/tasks for contractor clients
Strong understanding of Temporary Works procedures and design assurance
Experience working with contractor, consultant and client teams
Ability to technically review and challenge engineering proposals
Strong written communication and technical reporting skills
Confident dealing directly with clients and senior project stakeholders
Ability to work independently and act as a technical authority within the business
Previous experience supporting or mentoring engineers
UK education background, including A-levels
The Opportunity
This is an excellent opportunity for a Chartered Senior or Principal Engineer looking to progress into an Engineering Manager position within an established infrastructure contractor.
You will have significant technical influence across the Infrastructure division, leading the engineering design team while remaining closely involved in Temporary Works, design assurance, technical problem-solving and value engineering across live projects
