Dual Diagnosis Worker

Responsible to: Service Manager

Location: Wandsworth

Rate: £12.63 per hour

Contract: Temp / Ongoing

Service Main Purpose of role:

To provide excellent quality dual diagnosis support; through assessment, support planning, coaching and motivational interviewing to service users who have comorbid drug/ alcohol and mental health issues to ensure they move forward in their recovery journey. To guide, facilitate, teach, and enable Senior Recovery Workers to provide targeted interventions in their support of service users who are using drugs and / or alcohol and have a mental health diagnosis.

Key responsibilities: Service User Services

• To provide specialist support and interventions for service users in the Wandsworth MH Rehabilitation and Recovery Service who are using drugs and / or alcohol.

• To work with Senior Recovery Workers in their support of service users who are using drugs and / or alcohol to enable them to be more knowledgeable and therefore effective in their support of people with dual diagnosis.

• To work with the Senior Recovery Workers in carrying out strengths and aspirations assessments and safety planning for service users who use drugs and / or alcohol.

• To attend Service User, Care Programme Approach (CPA) review meetings as appropriate.

• co-produce group work for service users around dual diagnosis including but not limited to alcohol / drug interactions with MH medications, effects of drugs and alcohol, healthy lifestyles, treatment regimens for substance misuse and the cycle of change.

• To co-produce training sessions including bite sized workshops for staff around a range of areas related to dual diagnosis including signs and symptoms of drug / alcohol use, effects of drugs / alcohol, cycle of change and motivational interviewing, treatments available for substance misuse.

• To create a database of resources for the team to use around drugs and alcohol including links to local agencies and national resources.

• To liaise effectively with other agencies, specifically substance misuse and dual diagnosis services as well as other services along with the Key Senior Recovery Worker, involved in the support of client service users. Co-Production

• To define the relationship between service users and staff as one of mutuality and reciprocity rather than of dependency.

• To facilitate the engagement of service users who are using alcohol and / or drugs in the development and delivery of group work for their peers, and training for staff members, creating a focus on strengths and abilities.

• To support service users who use drugs and / or alcohol to effectively take part in the design and delivery of the service and to ensure that their voices are heard in any consultation processes.

• To encourage and enable with service users who use drugs and / or alcohol to work alongside staff as partners in the delivery of services administration.

• To maintain accurate service users’ records on client’s case management system for each specific service user who uses alcohol and / or drugs in conjunction with the Key Senior Recovery Worker.

• To keep effective records of all internal and external communication regards specialist dual diagnosis support to service users including written evidence of verbal conversations.

• To keep effective records on all attendance from services users at group work sessions and all staff at training sessions. Policy and Practice

• To take part in promoting and developing the service standards of the organisation.

• To have knowledge of and follow relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.

• To carry out other duties as may be reasonably required by senior staff. Personal Development

• To take a proactive part in regular 1-1 supervisions, annual appraisals and take up opportunities to learn within the service, organisation and externally the service is required to reduce hospital admissions so that 85% of Service Users have no acute mental health inpatient admissions per quarter; effective management of drug/and or alcohol is vital in achieving this.

Key Skills

• Knowledge and experience of working with people with drug and/or alcohol use and mental health issues in a dual diagnosis context.

• Knowledge of key issues relating to drug and alcohol use including approaches and specific interventions, treatment options and legislation.

• Knowledge of relevant MH legislation in particular the Care Programme Approaches and its delivery to Service Users who have MH diagnoses and use drugs and/or alcohol.

• Ability to work within a team or by your own initiative.

• Understanding of health and safety issues related to drug and alcohol use in a residential setting.

• Understanding of legal implications related to working with those how use illegal drugs in a residential setting.

• Ability and the commitment to work through Co-Production

• Knowledge and understanding of drug and /or alcohol and medical contraindications and the awareness where to find further information in this area.

• Ability to gauge/assess other people’s learning styles and adapt training to ensure it is effective.

• Good IT skills including a working knowledge of functions in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the internet.

• Excellent literacy and numeracy skills and able to produce clear training guides, case notes, advocacy, reporting and monitoring.

• Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
