Design Technology Technician – Sheffield

Location: Sheffield
Start Date: After October Half-Term (November 2026)
Contract: Full-time, Temporary
Duration: Initially Until Christmas
Salary: Competitive Daily Rates

Job Description

PK Education are recruiting for an experienced Design Technology Technician to join a well-established secondary school in Sheffield, starting immediately after October half-term.

This is a full-time temporary position, initially running until Christmas, supporting a busy and established Design Technology department.

The school offers a broad and ambitious curriculum, with a strong focus on practical learning, creativity and developing students' technical skills. Design Technology plays an important role in the school, providing students with opportunities to explore product design, manufacturing processes and practical workshop techniques.

The successful candidate will primarily support Product Design and Resistant Materials, rather than Art or Textiles, helping teachers deliver safe and engaging practical lessons across the department.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with previous experience in a school DT workshop, manufacturing, engineering, carpentry or a similar practical environment.

The Role

Supporting the delivery of Product Design and Resistant Materials lessons

Preparing materials, tools and equipment for practical DT lessons

Setting up and maintaining workshop machinery and equipment

Supporting teachers with practical demonstrations and classroom activities

Preparing wood, metal, plastics and other materials for student projects

Maintaining stock levels and ordering materials where required

Ensuring workshops are clean, organised and safe for students and staff

Carrying out routine maintenance and safety checks on equipment

Supporting students with practical projects where appropriate

Following health and safety procedures, including safe machinery operation

The Ideal Candidate

Previous experience as a Design Technology Technician or in a practical workshop environment

Strong knowledge of Product Design and Resistant Materials

Confident working with wood, metal, plastics and workshop tools

Understanding of workshop machinery and safe working practices

Experience preparing materials for practical projects

Knowledge of health and safety procedures within a DT environment

Organised, reliable and able to work independently

Previous experience within a UK secondary school would be advantageous

Available to start after October half-term

Hold, or be prepared to undergo, an Enhanced DBS Check

Why Is This a Great Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to work within an established Sheffield secondary school with a strong academic reputation and a commitment to developing students' practical and technical skills.

The Design Technology department provides students with opportunities to develop their understanding of materials, manufacturing techniques and the design process, combining creativity with hands-on problem-solving.

Unlike more general creative technician positions, this role has a particular focus on Product Design and Resistant Materials, making it ideal for someone who enjoys working with workshop equipment, preparing practical projects and supporting technical learning.

With a consistent full-time timetable from November until Christmas, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced DT Technician looking for a short-term placement within education.

Why Choose PK Education?

Established local education recruitment agency since 2005

Excellent competitive daily rates

Opportunities across Sheffield and South Yorkshire

Dedicated support from an experienced local consultant

Access to temporary and long-term school support opportunities

Interested?

If you're an experienced DT Technician or have a background in Product Design, Resistant Materials, Engineering or practical workshop support, we'd love to hear from you
