About the role

We are seeking an experienced Deputy Head of Building Control (Class 3 Specialist) to support a senior leadership team within a dynamic Planning & Building Control service.

This role sits at the centre of building safety, regulatory compliance, and high-risk construction oversight. You will help lead a professional Building Control team, manage complex developments, and ensure compliance with national building safety legislation.

You will also work closely with the Head of Building Control and act as a key liaison with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR).

Key responsibilities

* Lead and support a team of Building Control inspectors, including mentoring and workload management

* Assess and determine complex Building Control applications, including high-risk “in scope” buildings

* Carry out plan checking, site inspections, and enforcement activity

* Ensure compliance with the Building Act 1984, Building Regulations 2010, and Building Safety Act 2022

* Manage dangerous structures response and participate in an out-of-hours emergency rota

* Deputise for the Head of Building Control when required

* Act as expert witness in legal proceedings where necessary

* Engage with developers, contractors, residents, and external agencies to ensure safe development

* Support performance reporting, service improvement, and regulatory engagement with the BSR

About you

* Chartered member of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent)

* Registered Building Inspector (Class 3 – BICoF framework)

* Significant experience in Building Control, including complex and high-risk projects

* Experience managing or supervising technical teams

* Strong knowledge of UK Building Regulations and associated legislation

* Confident communicator with strong stakeholder engagement skills

* Able to make sound, risk-based technical decisions under pressure

Why join us

You will play a key role in shaping building safety and compliance across a diverse and evolving built environment. This is an opportunity to work at a senior technical level, influence strategic outcomes, and support the development of a high-performing Building Control service.

We offer hybrid working, professional development opportunities, and a supportive leadership environment.

Additional requirements

* Full UK driving licence and ability to attend site inspections, including challenging environments

* Participation in dangerous structures rota (including out-of-hours response)

* Flexible approach to working patterns when service needs require it
