This Data Catalogue & Governance Analyst will report to the Head of Enterprise Data and will work within the Enterprise Data based in either our London, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds or Crawley office. You will be a permanent employee.

You will attract a salary of £61,723.00 and a bonus of 3%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote

Job Purpose

To support our network digitalisation plans, we are looking for someone to help develop our data catalogue and governance capabilities within the organisation., You will embed our data catalogue, working with an emerging community of data partners and owners across the business to describe and manage their data, including defining important terms as part of the implementation of our Data Catalogue, Glossary and Governance tool.

You must be passionate about data, with experience of data management, and a good partner engagement skills that allow you to build rapport quickly. An understanding of the importance of data governance and metadata is preferable, and experience of metadata projects and establishing data stewardship.

You will be someone who wants to embed good data management practices, working collaboratively with a growing enterprise data team and aided by leading technology. You will put yourself in the mind of a user to ensure data is described clearly, potential ambiguity is avoided and provide guidance to partner across the business on how to do this. You will look to establish standard processes and templates to increase adoption of good data practices by internal data projects or business areas.

There is scope for this role to shape the approach to how data is managed including how we go about designing and setting up a data management tool we are in the process of selecting. You will play an important part in driving parts of this product, including a data discovery exercise to populate the tool with lists of critical data and what they contain. This information will be published both internally and externally as part of our pledge to sharing data openly wherever possible.

Principal Accountabilities

Support UKPN's strategic goal to enable staff to find, access, share and trust our data and analytics more effectively.
Work with a community of data partners across the organisation to populate a data catalogue with key data assets, including supporting with data discovery exercises using automated tools where applicable.
Collaborate across the business to identify key business terms for understanding our data, collating definitions and validating them and maintaining them in the enterprise business glossary.
Work with the Head of Enterprise Data to develop and administer enterprise data governance and metadata management activities, supporting adoption of good data management practices across the organisation.
Help people with practical guidance on how to manage data effectively, providing pragmatic guidance and creating standard processes and templates to facilitate good practice.
Provide updates on the status of projects, escalating where there are blockers to delivery.
Ensure that the emerging community of data owners and stewards are successful, including coordinating forums and flagging where there are issues with poor engagement.
Improve the design and adoption of the metadata and governance aspects of the new data management tool, shaping how it is used by the organisation.
Support with our open data initiatives by ensuring our external facing Open Data portal has up to date definitions and descriptions of data.
Acquire and maintain knowledge of relevant industry trends around data management, including research and working with other energy organisations to share good practice.
Endeavour to provide rapid response services, providing a positive contribution to the wider enterprise data team, their meetings and ad-hoc issues.
Support the analyst community, data users and consumers working at the front line of data and insight.

Nature & Scope

You will report to the Data Governance & Quality Manager within the Asset Management directorate.

You will be an important member of a diverse team, collaborating with data engineering, data science and analytics specialists, information management staff, solution developers and business domain partners, such as data owners, data stewards and analysts. The primary goal of the role is to lead good practice in our governance of data and metadata management, cementing UK Power Networks' position as the leading UK DNO with respect to safety, customer service and efficiency.

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent project-related experience) in computer science, information systems or a related subject.
Experience in data management, data governance or metadata management with an understanding of relevant principles.
A good understanding and positive appreciation of the importance of data management and governance.
Experience working as part of a data team, programme or enterprise data function.
Have drafted documentation such as policies, standards, guidance material and procedures.
Some previous hands-on experience working with data owners and/or stewards, and data management techniques and tools.
Understanding of key data-related regulations, standards and frameworks, such as DAMA, GDPR, Dublin Core and Ofgem's Data Best Practice.
Experience of other data governance principles such data quality management, master data management, data risk and data privacy.
Experience working with data in the utilities / energy sector would be advantageous.
