Position : Chief Executive Officer

Alternate Job Titles : Chief Operating Officer, Operations Director, Clerk to the Company, General Manager

Location : Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Hybrid : No - the role is office based at the Cutlers' Hall in Sheffield City Centre

Salary : c £70,000

The Cutlers' Company was established by a Parliamentary Act of Incorporation in 1624 and for four hundred years has sought to maintain the standards and quality of Sheffield manufactured cutlery and steel products and to promote the name of Sheffield. As manufacturing in the region has changed over the centuries, so the Company reflects this by highlighting the innovation in the region as well as upholding Sheffield's proud heritage.

Due to the retirement of the current Clerk, we are now looking for someone to join the Company and to lead on maximising the opportunities that are open to it. As times change, the Company wants to ensure continued profitability, success, growth and influence with a more commercially focused approach. As well as the ceremonial or ambassadorial parts of the role, we are looking for the new Clerk to take on more of a CEO / COO / Operations Director function responsible for the effective leadership, growth and development of the Company's hospitality business and other revenue generating operations.

About the Role

The duties of the Clerk / CEO are varied, but can loosely be broken down into two parts

1. Commercial and Administrative

· Management of the Company's operations

· Management of the Company's finances including responsibility for delivering profitability

· Management and growth of the Company's Hospitality operation including weddings, dinners, ceremonies and more

· Develop and expand the Company's business operations.

· Management of the Cutlers' Hall and the Team of 18 full time employees. The Cutlers' Hall is a Grade 2 listed building which is owned by the Company and considered to be one of the finest Livery buildings in the country.

· Organisation and Management of Company Events

· Administration of the Membership record (Freeman and Friends)

· Management of Company communications including website, social media and answering correspondence sent to the Company

· Management and development of the Company supply chain

· Providing reports on activity to the Executive Committee on a regular basis

2. Ceremonial and Ambassadorial

· Represent the Company at events in London and elsewhere as required

· Representation of the Company regionally as required

· Act as Secretariat to the Cutlers Hall Preservation Trust and the Cutlers Company Charitable Trust.

What will you bring to the table ?

· A strong work ethic and passion

· People leadership and motivation

· Strategic vision, able to identify opportunities for growth / efficiency increases and to put processes in place to achieve those goals

· A commercially minded approach with the ability to manage and to grow a hospitality / events / membership organisation from its current turnover of c £1 million. Increases in turnover and profitability allow the Company to do more on the civic side.

· Financial awareness and experience in overseeing accounts. Proficiency with profit and loss accounts and with balance sheets

· The ability to learn and adapt to a changing business environment

· The ability to organise high level events and activities including the appropriate protocol

· First class interpersonal skills, able to comfortably interface between organisations, businesses or companies and networking across a range of outside agencies

· Interest in understanding the wider economic environment, both regionally and nationally, and the importance of manufacturing to the UK

· Flexibility. The Clerk / CEO will be expected to attend formal events with the Master Cutler and their team. This will require some evening and weekend work, and also events that will necessitate overnight stays away from the Sheffield region

· In order to be able to fulfil this challenging role, you will be resident in or able to relocate to the Sheffield area

Desirable traits:

· Experience in hospitality operations or similar is beneficial
· A good understanding of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire region geographically and commercially
· An interest in skills training and education
· An interest in manufacturing

Whilst we are very open to different experiences, we are particularly keen to hear from people who have prior experience in

· Livery Company or Guild Circles

· Hospitality or hotel management

· Charitable Organisations
