New Chapter Tuition is looking for a BSL Level 3 Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support to a deaf KS4 student within a mainstream secondary school in Lewisham.
The student is new to the UK and is at the beginning of his journey developing British Sign Language. He currently communicates verbally and through lip reading and requires consistent support to develop his communication, access learning and build confidence and independence within school.
The school is currently determining the longer-term employment arrangement for this position. This may be a long-term temporary/contract position through New Chapter Tuition or a direct fixed-term/permanent contract with the school. The final employment structure will be discussed with candidates as the recruitment process progresses.
The Role

Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day.
*
Introduce and model BSL to develop the student's communication skills.
*
Support communication between the student, teachers and peers.
*
Use BSL alongside gesture, visual prompts and modelling.
*
Support access to lessons and the wider school day.
*
Encourage confidence, communication and independence.
Requirements
*
Minimum BSL Level 3 qualification.
*
Experience supporting deaf or hearing-impaired children or young people is highly desirable.
*
Communication Support Workers and qualified or trainee BSL Interpreters are also encouraged to apply.
*
A patient, resilient and creative approach to communication.
*
Confidence working within a secondary school environment.
