Behaviour Support Assistant | Newport | Full-Time | September Start

Do you have experience supporting children or adults who display challenging behaviour?
Are you passionate about making a positive difference to the lives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds?
Looking to earn £462.80 - £543.20 per week?
Interested in ongoing CPD training and career development?
Company pension scheme and additional employee benefits available.
Seeking a rewarding and varied role within education?
Considering a long-term career supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs?
Vision for Education are recruiting a Behaviour Support Assistant to work within a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Newport, starting September.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with experience supporting children or adults with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD). We welcome applicants from education, care, youth work, sports coaching, residential support and other people-focused backgrounds.

The school supports pupils who require additional behavioural and emotional support to achieve their full potential. Many of these young people have experienced challenging circumstances, and school provides a safe, structured environment where positive relationships can have a lasting impact.

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will act as a positive role model, building trusted relationships with pupils and helping them regulate their emotions, engage with learning and develop confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

You will play a key role in recognising early signs of dysregulation, using de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour management techniques to support pupils before situations escalate. Staff are encouraged to take a calm, restorative approach, helping pupils re-engage with learning in a safe and supportive way.

A Team Teach qualification (or similar positive behaviour management training) would be advantageous but is not essential, as full training can be provided.

The Role

Supporting primary and secondary-aged pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
Working with pupils on both a 1:1 basis and in small groups
Building positive, trusting and professional relationships
Supporting pupils through challenging situations with patience and resilience
Working alongside teachers and wider support staff to meet individual learning and behavioural needs
Encouraging positive engagement, participation and independence
Using de-escalation techniques and positive behaviour strategies to support learning
Helping to create a safe, inclusive and nurturing learning environment

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has one or more of the following:

Experience supporting children or adults with challenging behaviour, SEMH or additional needs
A Team Teach qualification or similar training such as PROACT-SCIP or MAPA (desirable, not essential)
Experience within education, care, youth work, residential care, sports coaching or similar settings
A calm, resilient and empathetic approach
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
The ability to remain patient and adaptable in challenging situations
An understanding of the National Curriculum is beneficial
Registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC), or willingness to register

What We Offer

Weekly pay of £462.80 - £543.20, depending on experience and qualifications
Full-time position with a September start
Ongoing CPD and professional development opportunities
Company pension scheme and additional employee benefits
A supportive school environment with excellent mentoring
Genuine opportunity to secure a permanent position through commitment, reliability and strong performance
We welcome applications from candidates with backgrounds in support work, care, youth work, residential care, sports coaching, teaching assistance and education.

If your experience comes from a different sector but you feel your skills would make you an excellent Behaviour Support Assistant, we would still love to hear from you.
