About the role

To perform and assist the pathologist with postmortems. Evisceration and reconstruction of deceased.

Manage bodies for postmortem examination, exercising judgement on the extent of such preparation so as not to jeopardise subsequent forensic investigations and/or criminal proceedings, record findings for the pathologist.

Manage the needs and availability of pathologists which includes different start time or finish times.

Organisation of collection, transport, storage and packaging of samples taken under the HTA, PACE or toxicology requests including relevant paperwork.

Updating and auditing of Mortuary Database for accuracy of data.

To conduct postmortems on deceased who are a possible or known high risk (HIV, HEP B, C etc.) including the collection of specimens, safe storage and distribution to specialist centres.

Support the delivery of the forensic postmortem service.

Accommodate Police ID, assisted by Family Liaison Officer (FLO).

To manage mortuary shared inbox and answer phone and designate information or emails accordingly

Partake in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity

Good general knowledge of Microsoft office applications. (Excel/Word/Access)

To assist the Designated Individual under the licence from the Human Tissues Authority as the Person Designated (PD).

To follow Human Tissue Authority (HTA) & Haringey Councils Codes of Practice and Guidance to ensure the mortuary department complies with relevant standards.

About you

An appropriate professional qualification such as a Certificate/Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Science.

Knowledge and post qualification experience in mortuary work including high risk and forensic post mortems

Ability to use equipment and IT applications and interpret electronic information accurately.

Experience of working on own initiative, demonstrating the ability to work under pressure

Flexible approach to working hours, duties and location to meet the needs of the service

An understanding and application of the importance of customer focused service where service delivery and advice is vital.

Ability to prioritise workload and meet performance targets.

Ability to work safely and effectively under pressure

Ability to implement and assist in developing policies and procedures.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to meet deadlines.

Experience in carrying out audits of mortuaries and solving non compliance

Knowledge of the Human Tissue Act and guidelines

Knowledge of developments in the field of Mortuary Services

A broad understanding of Health understanding regulations and acceptance of responsibility for their practical application

Ability to deal sensitively with bereaved families of all religions/cultures in a tactful and sensitive matter.

Attention to detail when checking patients information on request forms/specimens

Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate with a range of different people, including all levels of pathology/hospital staff, Coroner and the community.

Written communication skills in order to complete audit and accurately record data required and Ability to record and transfer data accurately

Physical mobility and ability to lift and move bodies as required for the purpose of preparing bodies for post-mortem and storage
