Modeshift’s Active Travel Ambassadors (ATA) programme has been running in secondary schools nationwide since September 2022, educating young people about the importance of active travel and supporting them in delivering their own campaigns focussed on sustainability and road safety.

For the 2024/25 academic year, we are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic Active Travel Ambassador Regional Coordinator (ATAC) to deliver to secondary schools in the South East. As ATA Coordinator, you will deliver classroom based sessions to groups of young people and assist school staff in developing a School Travel Plan using the Modeshift STARS system. You will also organise and host regional events for schools participating in the programme. The programme is delivered in partnership with The Bikeability Trust and is subject to funding from Active Travel England.

Key Responsibilities:

* To engage and recruit secondary schools to participate in the ATA programme.

* To successfully deliver the ATA programme to all participating schools including educational classroom sessions, multi-school Campaign Junction events, campaign delivery and end of programme celebration events. All schools must complete the programme by the end of July each year.

* To capture annual travel data using the Modeshift STARS system and support schools in achieving Modeshift STARS Travel Plan accreditation.

* To manage school paperwork such as school grants and media consent forms, adhering to GDPR guidance.

* To capture impact data and compile termly reports that are circulated internally and externally.

* To maintain accurate records of sessions via Outlook Calendar, SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.

* Develop and maintain local working links between schools, local authorities, transport operators, and other key stakeholders to maximise the impact of active travel campaigns.

* To raise the profile of Modeshift and ATA by representing the organisation at meetings, workshops, school events, activities local conferences, and stakeholder meetings as required.

* To ensure the programme is inclusive for all by adapting resources as necessary whilst maintaining Modeshift brand guidelines.

* To provide case study content for newsletters and social media channels.

* Any other duties of a related nature which might be allocated by the Modeshift Management team.

Contract: School term time only 37.5 hours per week. Fixed term contract to 31 August 2025 (potential for extension subject to funding). Start date Monday 2 September 2024.

Salary: Post Salary £21,000- 24,000 pro rata based on 37.5 hours per week (£28-32k FTE)

Disclosure: An enhanced DBS check is required for this position as the post holder will be working with children in educational settings.

Location: Working in secondary schools in selected local authorities in the South East (Hampshire, Southampton, Surrey, Portsmouth). Flexibility to work from home when not visiting schools. Being a sustainable travel organisation, we support and encourage colleagues to travel via sustainable means where possible. As extensive regional travel is required for the role, the ideal candidate will be based close to good transport links.

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday. Working hours between 08:00 – 18:00. Core working hours are 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00

Active Travel Ambassadors (ATA)

The ATA programme supports secondary school pupils in devising their own active travel behaviour change campaigns to increase sustainable journeys in their school community. The scheme involves training, resourcing, and supporting students to deliver actions in their school, to their peers and teachers. Throughout the programme, pupils will develop leadership, public speaking and campaigning skills and schools will gain a Modeshift STARS accredited Travel Plan. The programme is delivered in partnership with the Bikeability Trust and is funded by Active Travel England.

Purpose of Post

As an ATAC, you will provide secondary schools with a package of measures to offer pupils the skills, information and motivation to walk and/or cycle to school and for future journeys. You will deliver classroom-based sessions and organise school events in selected local authorities in your region. You will work with secondary schools to recruit between 6 – 12 pupils and train them as Ambassadors. With the support from designated school staff, Ambassadors will research and develop campaigns focussing on active travel, road safety and improving passenger experience. Campaign initiatives can include themed assemblies, walking and cycling competitions and community events, and will contribute towards the school’s Travel Plan. To deliver effective campaigns, Ambassadors will be given the opportunity to present and receive feedback from transport professionals at a Dragons Den style event called the Campaign Junction. Ambassadors will have the opportunity to pitch for funding of up to £250 to support their campaign ideas.

You will be required to work with The Bikeability Trust, combined or transport authorities and Modeshift colleagues to recruit secondary schools to achieve an increased in levels of walking and cycling.

All data collected through the scheme will go into the Modeshift STARS programme.
