1:1 Special Needs Teaching Assistant
Position: Special Needs Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support)
Location: York, North Yorkshire
Contract Type: Full-Time
Start Date: Immediate
Duration: Ongoing

GSL Education is working with a Primary School in York to appoint a compassionate and dedicated Special Needs Teaching Assistant to provide one-to-one support for a Year 3 student with Downs syndrome. This full-time position requires someone with experience and a genuine passion for working with children with special educational needs.

About the Role:

As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will be providing essential support to a non-verbal Year 3 student with Downs syndrome. Your role will involve assisting with his educational and personal care needs, ensuring he has the best possible learning experience in a safe and nurturing environment.

Special Needs Teaching Assistant Key Responsibilities:

Provide one-to-one support to the student, assisting with daily learning activities and helping him engage in school life.
Implement individualised educational plans (IEPs) and support the student in achieving his learning goals, with help and support from the SENCO and other health professionals.
Assisting with personal care needs, including feeding and toileting.
Use non-verbal communication strategies and tools to facilitate interaction and understanding.
Collaborate with Teachers, the SENCO, and other staff to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Promote social interaction and participation in classroom activities.
Special Needs Teaching Assistant Requirements:

Previous experience working with children with special educational needs, particularly those with Downs syndrome or who are non-verbal, is highly desirable.
Patience, empathy, and a caring approach to supporting children with additional needs.
Strong communication skills and the ability to use non-verbal communication methods effectively.
Capability to provide personal care and manage the student's physical needs.
Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, health care or special educational needs (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification).
An Enhanced DBS registered to the update service. GSL Education can support a new application where required.
Relevant references from within the last 2 years.
